Woods is proud to announce that the Honourable Clément Gascon has been named an Honourary Member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada (IIC). This Honourary Membership is granted to individuals having tremendously contributed to the profession, and had only ever been bestowed on three other persons: the Hon. James Farley, the Hon. Frank Newbould, and Mrs. Jan Fralick.
The Hon. Gascon’s invaluable expertise in insolvency and restructuring matters stretches back to his days as coordinating judge of the Quebec Superior Court’s Commercial Division (which hears all matters under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA), and business corporation acts).
Throughout his seventeen year career in the Canadian judiciary, culminating at the Supreme Court of Canada, the Hon. Gascon has rendered a vast number of judgments in complex restructuring matters, notably in the extensive restructuring of Abitibi-Bowater. The IIC is “Canada's premiere interdisciplinary forum for leadership in the field of commercial insolvency and restructuring”. Based on a thorough and strict application review process, it regroups the leading practitioners in the country in these areas. Mtre Sylvain Vauclair, head of Woods’ insolvency and restructuring group, is among the members of the IIC.
